Journey to the Soul
As we write poetry or prose,
we begin a journey –
a spiritual journey –
to find intimacy with the Holy,
who dwells within each of us.
The journey may be treacherous;
a crucial trek to reach our core.
Who is our muse? An angel?
Our inner critic is also always near.
Why do we embrace our critic,
and wrestle with our angels?
We must go to that profound space
where both pain and passion abide.
Do we write with passion?
Are we nurtured by the practice?
If we concentrate on soul,
it brings us to our knees,
where we are humbled by courageous
writers who face fear, yet keep writing.
Touching our soul in writing
is an inner journey, best fulfilled
in an atmosphere of spiritual
indwelling and reverence.
Our writing may be deemed holy,
but the ground we walk on –
however it quakes –
is experienced as sacred.
