Ode to My Joy

How can I ever repay you for showing me the way home? How can I ever say thank-you for helping me to receive eternal life? There will never be enough I can do. There will never be enough words, but this is for you, Joy. This is for changing my life forever. This is for telling me about Jesus.

If you were a song, you would be “Oh How He Loves You and Me.” I can hear you singing it now, your voice almost childlike as we sing together about how our Jesus loves us. It is a profoundly simple song, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

If you were a story, you would be “The Velveteen Rabbit.” I can see you reading it now, your eyes welling up with tears as we read together about how friendship can bring us to life. It is a profoundly simple story, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

If you were a day, you would be a country ride out to the German Baptist bakery and to the greenhouse nursery early in the spring. I can smell the fresh breads now, your face lighting up as we share together in the delight of cream-filled donuts. I can hear you laugh at me as I buy way too many flats of flowers. It is a profoundly simple day, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

If you were a style of clothing, you would be a well-worn pair of jeans and one of the sweatshirts we bought together at church camp. I can picture you now sitting around the campfire with all the kids, your unassuming beauty escaping the casual observer. It is a profoundly simple style, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

If you were a church, you would be an old country church, a church planted out in the middle of a cornfield with deep roots in faith and family. I can hear the small but loyal congregation now, singing almost off key during Sunday morning worship service. It is a profoundly simple church, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

If you were Truth, you would be the Truth found in Jesus, a kind of Truth that when all religion is cleared away, His pure love remains. I can see the Truth now, for your friendship has brought me to Him. It is a profoundly simple Truth, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

So there you have it: An Ode to My Joy, my best friend, my sister in Christ.

I can never repay you for showing me the way home and helping me to receive eternal life, but I can sing, “Oh How He Loves You and Me” with you. I can read books with you, eat donuts with you, go to church camp with you, and worship on Sunday mornings with you. Most of all, I can share eternal life with you because you told me about Jesus. Our Jesus, there is no better friend. He is profoundly simple, straightforward and sincere, just like you.

What a beautiful tribute to the ones who have been faithful to lead us to JESUS. May all who come behind us find us faithful! Enjoyed this very much!

This was a clever title. Was your friend really named Joy or was this a way to show the joy of your friendship?
Mary Nellum04/11/05
You made me think of some old and dear friends - thank you :)

Very creative, and I liked the almost poetic form!

What a gifted way you presented Joy to us. You painted her with deep moving spiritual images. You have honored her with your words. And honored us by sharing them.

The imagery you used here was terrific - all very comforting things, like a good friend. I loved the ending, too. Very memorable. I think Joy is also very blessed in having you for a friend!

I was skeptical at the beginning but by the end I was quite moved. Very good! Keep it up!
