When the telephone rings…
I never know what I may hear.
It could be someone down, depressed
And on the verge of suicide,
With fear, anxiety inside
From life that seems a hopeless mess.
When the telephone rings…
I may be speaking with a teen
Prepared to leave, to run away
From home where love is just a dream,
Where parents swear, degrade and scream,
Home filled with turbulence, dismay.
When the telephone rings…
May be a woman so afraid
With quiet, tearful, shaky voice,
Abused, confused, and lonely wife
Who longs to leave to save her life,
But doesn’t feel she has that choice.
When the telephone rings…
Before I answer, say a prayer
That I’ll be sensitive to needs,
I’ll show compassion, love and grace,
Encourage them to troubles face,
And speak to them as Spirit leads.
When the telephone rings…
I’m glad for opportunity
To speak with those who live in fear,
Through helpline, listen and give hope
That they will learn a way to cope.
I love to be a volunteer.
