Dear Mrs. Brunner,
Do you know what you did to me? Do you understand the consequences of the love and passion you stirred up inside of me? I bet you don't, it was so long ago.
I was maybe 13 or 14 and you were at least 30 years younger than you are today. You were my English teacher, and I was just another face in the crowd, but I can’t forget you.
I dream about you often, and I often look for you in crowds, try to google your name, and pray that we'll cross paths so I can tell you.
That’s why I’m writing this letter. I just have to blame you for what I have become.
Because of you I've served presidents and generals, and edited magazines and newspapers. Some of my profiles and reports have circled the globe and influenced world events. I've written countless magazine articles and newspaper stories and 4 books. I'm also working on some projects today that could impact the world for years to come.
Do you remember me? Probably not. When I walked into your class I was just one of many little boys wandering aimlessly through their first couple of years of high school. But you touched more than me, Mrs. Brunner. You probably don’t remember Pat and Les and Robert and Al. I don't know what happened to them, but I know you woke me up and made me live.
Today there are others who depend upon me to make them live. My words, both written and spoken, move people. Everyday I'm either speaking to crowds, tied to a keyboard or have an arm slung around somebody's shoulder. Other writers want my life. Other dreamers want my encouragement. I have to pay attention to them now, because of you.
I often wonder what happened to you after that sophomore year. Someone told me you moved to Australia. America’s loss but the Aussies gain, I’m sure. But I want to find you and let you know you made a difference in at least one life, and maybe a lot of others indirectly because of what you did for me. Where are you, really?
And if I found you would you remember the moment that changed my life? If I told you the circumstances of that moment would you guess, could you pinpoint the thing you did? Probably not, but I can’t forget it. So I’ll just tell you with a word of praise.
Mrs. Brunner, thanks for the “A” on that essay, and thank you for becoming an English teacher.
