“James, it’s simple, you don’t have any leadership qualities.” Coach Mel was as blunt as he could be. “I wouldn’t let you lead this basketball team even if you were the only one on it.”

James walked away feeling hurt and ashamed. He could not accept the fact that his coach had so little confidence in his ability to inspire and direct his teammates. He thought long and hard about what could have given Coach Mel the impression he was unworthy of the position he felt he deserved.

Was it possible that Coach Mel was thinking of the time he tied four basketballs to the back of Steve Kinnings’ El Camino? That was hilarious, and James was sure that couldn’t be what influenced the coach to decide he was not the right leader for the team.

So maybe it was the time he added three mice to the passenger list on the cheerleaders’ bus. That couldn’t be it. James was sure he had seen the coach giggle a bit when the cheerleaders hopped out the emergency exit screaming bloody murder. No way did the coach use that in determining he was not a leader. That was just a prank, a joke. No one got seriously hurt. James was sure Tammy Harrington’s ankle healed in less than a month and that Inga Franzelli was almost done with her therapy sessions. Nope, that definitely was not what made Coach Mel give a no confidence vote to James.

Maybe it was the time he put itching powder in Referee Mike Hollinder’s sports bag. The guy was so busy scratching he didn’t have time to call a single foul. The audience loved it. He could still hear the shouts and shrieks from the Huber High crowd. Man, if there was one thing that proved he was a leader, it was that little gem. He was sure that he was the only one on the team even smart enough to think of something like that. Genius. He might be considered a genius. Wouldn’t that also make him a great leader? Why, sure it would.

He walked right back to the coach, angry with the way he had been rejected. He would let the coach know how he felt. James walked into the coach’s office and right up to his desk. Coach Mel looked up from his paperwork and remained silent.

“Coach, I just want you to know, I can’t think of one thing I have ever done that would give you the impression I am not the right man for leading this team!”

“Why James, that is so ironic.”

“Ironic? How so?”

“I had only managed to find 99 reasons, and then you walked in and gave me a nice round number."

Hehe, too funny. Your last sentence was great.

Very clever! Only I'm wondering what the 99 reasons were, and why James didn't think of them... or was the Coach just making a joke?

A great lesson wrapped inside a seriously funny entry. Great job, I loved it! - Nancy

I must agree with Nancy. When you can get your point across in a painless way, that's genius. Loved it from start to finish, and what a great finish it was!
