Gardens are things of beauty, showcasing the glory of God. They possess a certain fairytale mystique, and they are where lovers long to tread. They are the pride of kings and princes, and they are called wonders of the world. Some would even swear that they have heard a garden whisper, “This is how things were meant to be.”

Life itself began in a garden. Out of nothing and by the sheer power of words, God created the world. He breathed the breath of life into man, and He placed him in a garden. Eden was good; it was how things were meant to be. It was the King of King’s garden, the backdrop of the best love story ever written.

Yet life was lost in a garden. The serpent tempted, the woman fell, and the man rebelled. God cursed them all, and the paradise of the garden was lost.

In a garden named Gethsemane, Jesus pleaded with God for another way. In great duress, blood intermixed with sweat, He said, “Your will be done.” Victory would be won, the curse would be overcome, and paradise would be restored. The hope of life’s redemption was sealed in a garden.

John, the beloved disciple, says that Jesus is like a gardener, caring and tending those whom He loves. We might call God the Great Gardener, working the field of His creation. He will create a new heaven and a new earth, and it seems likely that He will create a new garden also. If Eden was a good garden; this new garden will be a perfect garden. In this garden things will be even better than they were meant to be.

Do you know the Great Gardener? Have you submitted your life to His gentle pruning? You are more precious than flowers that could be found in the most beautiful of gardens, and we know that He takes care of even the smallest flower. If He cares for the flowers, how much greater must His love be for you!

I have but one wish, one dream, and one hope: to walk and talk with God in His garden. Only one thing can make my dream better. Will you walk and talk with us, too?
