TITLE: The Invitation
By Joyce Simoneaux

An invitation was sent to attend the King’s ball.
Who wouldn't accept such a gift free to all?
“Come away with Me,” was what they all read.
“We’re going to the ball,” they excitedly said.
Young and old prepared for this wondrous event.
“We must hurry! Time is waisting!” And off they all went.

One pretty, young maiden did not heed the call.
Victoria believed she mustn’t go to the King’s ball.
She lived in the gutter with only dirt for a bed.
Her clothing was tattered; her life filled with dread.
No, she would not go to such a holy affair.
She feared all the others would just point and stare.

The time had come for all to arrive in finest attire.
Excitement was building as emotions climbed higher.
As they surveyed their surroundings, such a sight to behold--
Crystal walls, a great staircase, and pillars of gold!
Heavenly beings could be heard crying, “Holy is the Lord!”
Giving glory to the One they all loved and adored.

Victoria wept as she thought about events taking place,
But her plight seemed hopeless; tears streaked her face.
She longed to be there where laughter was heard,
But the thought of her attendance was just too absurd.
She lay on her bed and tried to drift off to sleep,
But despair overwhelmed her as she continued to weep.

In that moment, an angel appeared with a gown of pure white.
He cleaned her and dressed her then vanished from sight.
The invitation lay there bidding her come away to the dance.
Fleeting hopes enveloped her as she dreamed of romance.
But, alas, she mustn’t think of things that surely can’t be.
Well, maybe she’d attend the dance just to see.

Her arrival was greeted with smiles amidst all the chatter.
“Hello, nice to see you,” as if she really did matter.
Victoria joined the ladies descending the stairs and saw
All the gentlemen who waited on the dance floor in awe.
As the music began, each couple joined hands
And waltzed to the music of the heavenly band.

Victoria was left standing among the pillars alone.
The uncomfortable feeling left her longing for home.
If she could but slip away, no one would notice her plight
So she planned a quiet exit to make good her flight.
Why had she come? She felt humbled and shamed.
Surely this wasn’t someone’s idea of a cruel game.

Silently she prayed for a way to escape through the door.
Her heart couldn’t stand even one small break more.
As she turned, there He stood, and she sucked in her breath.
His eyes held such kindness, pure love and such depth.
Unable to move, she felt captured by His holy embrace.
Her eyes could not move off of His wonderful face.

“May I have this dance?” He asked with a radiant smile.
She was drawn to agree being led all the while
To the center of the dance floor as a sweet melody played.
He took her in His arms and around they sashayed
As they danced, Victoria saw there formed a great cloud.
The others left the dance floor as they reverently bowed.

“Why me, Lord?” she asked as they continued to dance.
Now she was certain that she was not here by chance.
“I wanted show you that you’re valued. Of that you can be sure.”
Victoria felt loved as she prayed for the feeling to endure.
As the melody played on her mind, she felt sure of one thing;
Her life was transformed as she danced with her King.

I love the beauty of this piece. We all feel unworthy at times, and in and of ourselves are dressed in filthy rags. How beautiful that the King wants to dance with us, and how wonderful that we are transformed as we dance with Him. Thanks for sharing!

Alot of work went into this poetic "Invitation". Just a couple minor flaws..."time is Wasting..not waisting"...and last verse...third line up; but otherwise very nice job. I liked the flow and also the message. Well done.
