Two tree halves
Two pints of blood
Three weathered spikes
Thousands of slivers of shredded skin
189,723,598 splinters
One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews

Two tree halves
Held an innocent man
Suspended between heaven and earth
Upon a tree so barren
A King was torn and battered.

Two pints of blood
Three weathered spikes
Thousands of slivers of shredded skin
189,723,598 splinters
One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews

Two pints of blood
Oozed from open wounds
Body in distress between heaven and hell
Dripping from an altar
A holy life offered in atonement.

Three weathered spikes
Thousands of slivers of shredded skin
189,723,598 splinters
One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews

Three weathered spikes
Driven into hands of healing
Holding feet once bathed in oil
Ripping flesh and tearing bones
A sacrifice was nailed in submission.

Thousands of slivers of shredded skin
189,723,598 splinters
One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews

Thousands of slivers of shredded skin
Humanity’s clothing draped
On Heaven’s divine Son
Shedding the sins of all mankind
A promise fulfilled with grace and mercy.

189,723,598 splinters
One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews

189,723,598 splinters
Tiny shards of destruction
Once comprised a tree of life
Brought forth to hold a redeemer
A wooden altar offered sweet aroma to heaven.

One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews

One scroll reading: Jesus, King of the Jews
Trumpets blared upon the wind
Heaven groaned at death’s last breath
Victory won; a veil was torn
The King of Glory came to save His people.

Very creative. Very moving...and very well done. Great piece of work - and tugs at the heartstrings...I really liked it.

Intersting repetion and beautifully done!

I just LOVE the structure of this - and amazing images. I'd say your free verse has certainly not gotten rusty! So well done!!
Jen Davis08/29/06
Very powerful imagery reinforced through repetition. I especially like how you ended many stanzas:

"A holy life..."
"A sacrifice was nailed..."
"A promise fulfilled..." Well done.
Edy T Johnson 08/29/06
Oh my! This is so well put together. The connections you make here:
"...Three weathered spikes
Driven into hands of healing
Holding feet once bathed in oil...."
pull other pictures into my mind, almost like watching a movie that fades one image into the other. Super job, here!
