I sigh and lean forward. “Abby, why can’t you go through with this?”
“Because, I don’t even know if he still loves me...if he’s just doing this out of pity or...” Her voice drops away painfully.
Her unstated plan is starting to come to mind. “Abby, you know that if you walk away from him...you’re killing not only yourself, but him as well.”
Abby doesn’t say a word. Her physical wounds are completely healed...but the spiritual and mental wounds are festering. With jerky movements, she points to a gown, stating that she will be a ‘good little solider’ and ignore whatever she is feeling.
She is about to walk away from the best thing that God has ever given to her. The attack she survived has crumpled her career because of her refusal to speak with the police chaplain. Everyone who knows her, especially those of us who are family (by birth or by marriage), can see the pain that she is causing in her marriage. Danny is desperate for her to smile, and a vow renewal, to let her know he loves her, is his last option.
“Fee, I know that marriage is for life...but I died that night, and no one can understand that.” She sadly states as she stands and heads for the door.
“Just, think about what you are doing...please.”
“Do you really think that I haven’t thought about this? It’s been on my mind since it happened.” Abby explodes. Her smoky eyes flash dangerously, then something just gives inside of her. “Just tell me when and where, and I’ll be there...”
She isn’t going to be there willingly.
I wonder if she is even going to be there at all. I hope so, for her sake and for her marriage.
