“…Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” (NIV 1 Jn. 3:16b)

Loving without holding.
Holding without holding down.
Holding down the fort.

Longing for a sweet caress.
The caress of a voice a continent away.
Caressing hearts if only for a day.

Working for the greater good.
Good for each other.
Good for our brothers.

Pulling double duty.
Duty to God.
Duty to Country.

Hearts full and proud.
Proud to be each other’s.
Proud to be Americans.

Respecting and honoring.
Honor for God.
Honor for our fellow man.

Defending and protecting.
Protecting the family.
Protecting the nation.

Willing to serve.
Serving out of reverence.
Serving out of necessity.

Never lying down.
Laying down our own desires.
Laying down our lives.


I lay down my life for him.
He lays down his life.
These are the sacrifices
Of a military husband and wife.

I really like the unusual structure of this poem, with the 2nd and 3rd lines of each stanza echoing the 1st line. Beautiful sentiments.

Very unique pattern - I liked it. The ending deviated from the pattern - but it's still a great poem :)

This poem brought up a lot of thoughts. I was in the military, and my husband was the "wife". I think it was more of a sacrifice for him than it was for me. It does echo the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. God bless you two.

"....and there shall be no more war"; I can't wait for that heavenly day! I hate war, but coming from a military family, being IN the military and marrying into the military...I respect the sacrifices of the troops of all Nations and their patriotism...and this little poem tells it all. Nicely done. God bless.
