“Mom?“ came Kaleb‘s voice from the doorway.
The break in silence startled Kate. She turned to face Kaleb. “Yes, sweetie?“
“I want my hair like dad’s.“
Kate gazed at their young son. Except for having dimples, Kaleb was a carbon copy of his dad. “He’s putting your and Bekka’s seats into his car. Ask him how to use the gel when he comes in. Okay?” She winked at him. “Breakfast is almost ready,“ she said as she turned to finish cutting strawberries.
“Okay.“
Usually compliant, Kaleb decided to style his hair by himself. Once in Kate’s and Paul’s bathroom, he scanned the counter for his dad‘s gel. He picked up the mustard-colored tube of gel, removed the top, and squeezed. The gel covered about a third of his palm. “My hair is longer than dad‘s, so I guess I need more,” he thought. He let air suck back into the tube and squeezed again. His palm was almost completely full of gel now. He put the tube back onto the counter. Then he rubbed his hands together as he had seen Paul do.
Gel was oozing between his fingers and he quickly clasped his hands onto his head and rubbed the gel into his hair. The only thing different was that his dad didn’t frantically try not to let the gel run down his neck and onto his clothes.
Kaleb rubbed and rubbed and rubbed. He tried to spike his hair but the gel was already drying! His hair was more glued than gelled, and it certainly didn’t look like Paul’s.
By this time, Kaleb heard Kate and Paul talking in the kitchen. He ran for help. “Dad!“ Kaleb shouted as he ran into the kitchen. “Can you make it like yours?“
Kate and Paul turned to see the hardening, gelatinous mess in Kaleb’s hair. Not sure whether to laugh, cry, or scold, they stood frozen for a moment.
Paul glanced at Kate. “I’ll see what I can do.“ There was no time to wash Kaleb’s hair so Paul combed out the excess gel and tried to comb Kaleb’s hair into some semblance of order.
Kaleb‘s eyes brimmed with tears. He wanted to look lime his dad.
“We’ll do it together in the morning. OK, sport?“
“OK.“
Paul kissed Kaleb‘s forehead. “Time for breakfast. Come on.“
Kate had awakened Bekka and dressed her by the time Paul and Kaleb got back to the kitchen.
Kate looked at Kaleb. “Your hair looks like Grandpa Choi’s,” Kate said to Kaleb, trying to make him feel a little better.
Kaleb gave a slight smile. He had tried so hard to look like his dad and he was embarrassed that he had messed up so.
After breakfast, Kate finished making their lunches and Paul herded the kids toward the door. “Put your shoes on, kids,“ as he went back to the kitchen to get the lunches.
Kate met him at the doorway of the kitchen.
Taking the lunches from her, he said, “And we’ll see you at Vinny’s this evening.“ Paul kissed Kate and started toward the kids. He turned around and whispered, “Oh, by the way, I’ll help ‘Little Mr. Helmet Head’ do his hair tomorrow.“ He grinned and winked at Kate.
Kate smiled. “Good idea.“ She chuckled. “Love you.“
“Love you back!“
