That being said, how then does a late starter or even a no-starter get into gear?
According to those in the know, one way to compel yourself to at least take a first step toward completion of a project is to set a specific date and then mark it BOLDLY on your calendar. Tell any and all who will listen that you have set this date aside to do such and so and would appreciate their reminding you of your contract with yourself..and them.
Personally, being a procrastinator has not always stood in the way of my writing career and often times my best work comes when I am almost out of time and pushed to the max! That may mean I’ll be sitting at my computer in the wee small hours of the morning wondering what I think I’m doing, but sometimes the results are quite good. Other times of course, there are just typos and run-on sentences because I fell asleep on the keyboard.
If I am honest with myself, I’d rather be one of those “let’s get right to it” types, the person who sees the need or project to be completed and marches forward with the right
equipment grasped firmly in hand. They leave us “thumb-twiddlers” in their dust as we mumble phrases like “not now” , “maybe later” and “how about an extension?”.
So, here are my own recommendations if you find yourself included among those who wear the title “procrastinator”.
Every time you actually sit down and write a few phrases, reward yourself. Personally I like Fudge Stripe Cookies, but you know your own preferences.
If you get so energized as to complete an entire page, well the reward gets bigger also. How about a movie, and I don’t mean the one you slip into your home DVD player. Go out. Get popcorn. Stay for two showings!
And should you actually complete the project call the local high school and arrange for their brass band to march briskly around your house playing the theme from “Rocky”. Not only will this get your own blood pumping, but it will show the neighbors that you can finish the project when you put your mind to it.
So, those are my thoughts on “Start” and maybe I’ll send them to this website…later. Right now I think there is a recliner with remote nearby and if I listen closely, I hear those “sirens of the Stratolounger” calling my name.
