“What do you mean Jessica? What is boredom?” he responded with a smile.
“What did you do when you were my age, Grandpa?”
Gerald thought for a while before he responded, “Well, my darling, things have changed in the last sixty years or so. In my young days we worked on the farm to help the family but when there was a chance we read books, went for long walks, swam in the nearby river or rode our bikes on the village roads. We found lots to laugh about and that made us happy. We did not need to be entertained. We had no television and one radio with a few stations that gave us mainly daily news. I lived in my ‘head’, you might say.”
Jessica had a look of pure consternation on her young ten-year-old face. She pondered for a few moments then added “What do you do now? You no longer work on the farm and you told me that you don’t read books as much.”
“As you know Jessie, I still go for walks with my buddies and with grandma. I must admit we laugh a lot less but I read books on my ebook reader. We no longer live near the sea or the river but we go fishing every time we can. Sadly I watch more television. The church has a weekly club for older folks like us. We have lunch and do street ministry in the town centre. That is not entertainment but I feel a strong sense of accomplishment. We also cook breakfast for the homeless on Saturday mornings.”
“Sweet child, what do you do for fun?” Gerry asked Jessica with a smile.
“Oh Grandpa, there is so much. I watch cartoons, play games with James, we do puzzles and Mummy takes us swimming and to the park. Oh, I so love the swings and the slides Grandpa. You must come too”
She paused a second before adding with gusto “We had a birthday party last week at Legoland and last month we went to Disney again!”
“How does God have fun, Grandpa?” was her surprising question.
It took him a moment or two before he could respond. ‘Out of the fog’, and as best he could without laughing out loud at her witty yet wise question, Gerald responded.
“He made flowers, animals, fish, birds and people and I think he enjoys the beauty and the glory of his creation. I believe that we give him pleasure when we read and obey His Word, worship Him and when we give honour to Jesus and to the Holy Spirit. Jesus gave some last minute instruction before he left the earth that we now call the Great Commission.*
‘Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.’ {Matt 28: 28-30}*
