However, in a not too distant bookshelf, there lived an American Indian chief; “Chief Looking Far” was his name. He was bored with his existence because, like them, no one had opened his book for a very long time. He suspected that no one wanted hear of the bloodshed that had happened to his people so long ago. The chief was positive though and soon hatched a plan to escape.
He climbed, he jumped, he flipped and swung the way Indians do and soon he was there. For one reason or another, all the despondent short story characters congregated in one dreadfully hopeless spot. With a yelp and a holler, the chief gathered their attention.
“Let’s leave,” he pleaded. “I know of a book far away, in another room, where there is hope and happiness. The sweet winds of that place will wash away the dread that has lived on us for so long.”
“Are ya insane? We’ll all die!” shouted a short, pudgy Scottish man.
“We’ll die here anyway.” He reasoned.
“Yes, but we’ll only die of heartache and sadness. With you, we’ll die of bloodshed and pain!”
They debated for quite a little while but eventually Chief Looking Far talked them into it. The book flopped open and out they jumped one by feeble one. They scampered down the bookshelf and across the library carpet. They made their way down the stairs and suddenly, an unexpected danger met them.
The chief beckoned them to be quiet, for it was the horrid “Fat boy” and “Snotty girl”. They hunkered down but it was too late. The children seeing the group scurrying about, grabbed every last one of them, for they were only the size of toys to the children. The girl cuddled with the chubby Scott, rubbing her snot all over his shoulders and head. He was about to scream some hideous insult but one of her boogers gagged his mouth.
The evil progenies carried the characters into the kitchen where they were going to make pretend soup out of them. First, they had to bathe them, so Fat boy got out a strainer from the bottom cupboard.
“Oh, we’re all going to die!” groaned one of the hopeless men.
He did not know that Chief Looking Far had foreseen this event and captured a mouse. The Indian leaped out of the strainer and running across the counter-top, he grabbed a pencil and sprang the mouse from its trap. As the mouse bolted, the cat jumped down from the top of the refrigerator and chased it throughout the whole kitchen. They knocked over spices and syrups. Dishes were strewn about and glasses were smashed.
Hearing the commotion, the mother of the twins walked in and beheld the catastrophe. Fat boy and Snotty girl began to cry and holler as the group made their escape.
Deeply shaken, they entered the father’s bedroom. On the far side, they spotted his large desk carved from mahogany. There was a lighted up computer screen with a stack of research lying next to it. On the wall were hung pictures of strange creatures, far away mountain ranges and extraordinary worlds. Most importantly, there laid an open book - “Island of the Blue Dolphins.”
They all stood before the pages. There was a young girl in the picture, looking out into the ocean. As Chief Looking Far gazed at her, it was as if he knew her. She turned her head and looked back at him. The two jumped into each other’s arms, tearfully embracing. Karana welcomed them all to her beautiful home on the island.
Finally, they had a home full of hope.
