From the beginning of creation God wanted us to be His companions, to worship Him and have fellowship with Him. What happened? Satan showed the strategy that he has honed since his fall from grace. He is a cheat and a sneak; he is a liar who thrives on persuading people to compromise.
Aren’t we all fallible? When he fires those sneaky arrows of doubt and fear into our minds, do we take heed? He tells us that obedience to God will bring discomfort, ridicule or pain. Compromise being a favourite tool, he offers alternatives to dissuade us from doing what we should. What he fails to reveal is the high cost of disobedience.
I look at so many Biblical heroes with weaknesses like ours, and who yet suffered the consequences of listening to the insinuation that said, “Don’t worry! Just a little deviation from God’s instruction won’t matter. He probably won’t even notice.”
Such strategies cost Rebekah and Isaac ongoing repercussions with far reaching consequences to their sons Jacob and Esau. They cost Saul his kingship, David his son; even Solomon, who had been granted wisdom beyond that of all of Egypt and the East, was tempted to disobey by marrying foreign wives and building high places for their gods, causing the Divided Kingdom.
Perhaps Sir Walter Scott was inspired by just such stories from the Bible when he wrote “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”
Praise God that we have the Holy Spirit to help us withstand those sneaky innuendos, the forgiveness through Jesus to get through the consequences if we fail to recognise the temptations and the ability to overcome them in His strength.
Romans 8:1&2 tells us: There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Get behind us, sneaky satan!
