My friends and I were frightened by his appearance. One day, we were playing ball and accidently knocked the ball into Old Lee's yard. As we peeked to see where the ball had landed, we saw his scary face framed in the window. We dove behind some bushes. He emerged through the creaking door and surveyed our ball.
"Hey, you kids get over here, now!"
Our hearts sounded like jack hammers inside our chests. As we trembled our way out of the bushes, he yelled again.
"This your ball!" We meekly nodded yes.
"Well, come and get it!" We stumbled over and Old Lee shoved the ball into my hand.
"Ah, ah, thank you."
"You need to be more careful where you play." bellowed Old Lee.
"Yes, yes sir, we will!"
"Just as long as you understand! he shouted.
"We, we do sir, sir!"
"Well, don't stand there, how about some cookies and milk?" Our mouths fell open. Old Lee came back with a plateful of Oreos and milk.
As we chowed down, Old Lee said, "I know people are afraid of me. They just don't understand how hard it is for me to survive. My family's dead and I have bad health and no one to help me."
"Today, I'm glad you threw that that ball in my yard. It's good to have someone to talk to."
When we got home, we told our parents that Old Lee wasn't mean--just misunderstood. Soon our parents and other members in the community came together and fixed up Old Lee's house, planted a flower garden and help him get his disability.
Old Lee may have barked a lot but we discovered beneath the surface was really a gentle soul. He was a reminder to look deeper for the diamond beneath.
