Where are they?
Wherever did I put them?
I’ll take another look in the shed.
No. They’re not in there. Definitely not in there.
I wonder? Did I put them down the old cottage? Can’t think why I would have done that, but I’ll go and have a look.
No, not a sign of them down there.
Better look in the house. Why would I have put them in the house? There’s no place I could have hung them up in there.
Let me think. It was about a couple of weeks ago I began redecorating the sunroom. Took a few things off the walls, including the coat hooks. Tied them together with a piece of old tights. Put them safely out of the way. I know.
The last of the paint’s just about dry. Only got to put a few things back in place. But where are those wretched coat hooks?
Wherever are they? They’re definitely not in the shed; been in there a dozen times or more. There’s nowhere else, is there? They’re not in the house; I’m sure of that. They’re not in the old cottage down the garden. They’re not anywhere. Simple. Obvious. They’re gone.
No, they can’t just be gone. They must be somewhere. They must be. Coat hooks don’t just disappear. They can’t evaporate. No one would steal things like that. Nobody would nick them as souvenirs. Wild animals don’t eat coat hooks – at least, not in this part of Wales.
Six of the miserable things tied up with tights.
Back to the shed for the umpteenth time. Oh dearie me! Oh dearie me!
How stupid can you get? What about God? Haven’t even given Him a thought. How thick!
I get down on the hard concrete floor. “Thank You, Lord, that I can’t find the coat hooks. You know where they are. You know exactly where they are. You see everything. You see how thick I am. And I forgot to pray about it. I forgot to come to You. Thank You, Lord that I can’t find them.”
Still on my knees, I glance up.
Wow! There they are! The coat hooks are there, right in front of me, hanging low down behind the workbench. That piece of old tights had stretched almost to the floor.
“Thank You, Lord for your goodness to me. How easily I forget the lessons You taught me all those years ago. I’m so sorry, Lord. Yes, I’m really sorry. How many other things would You reveal to me if I got on my knees more readily?”
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6, 7
