“Yes, it’s pretty to look at, but not much fun to drive in. I’m glad we left early.”
“I can’t believe that we are actually going and for three nights this time. I’m ready for a break but I am already worried about Lucy.” I got a lump in my throat just thinking about Gary dropping her off at the kennel. I pictured her standing up trying to climb over the counter. Imagining the confusion in her eyes as he walked out the door about broke my heart. I couldn’t have done it. I was glad that he dropped her off while I was at work.
“I know, but she’s in good hands. They will take good care of her. We got her the best suite in the place, did you forget that? She will have the run of the office and the staff will love her and give her a lot of attention. She’ll be fine.”
“What if she has a seizure? She usually has them at night while you are watching TV, but she is wrapped in my arms, safe and secure in bed. At the ranch, she will be locked in a cage at night with no one to hold her; no one will even be in the building.”
Second thoughts plagued my mind as I ran through scenario after scenario of the worst situations that could happen while we were one hundred and fifty miles away from home. Since it was Thanksgiving weekend, we couldn’t find anyone to come and stay at the house with her, so this was our only choice if we were to go away.
“Look, Lucy will be fine. You said so yourself. Now, stop tormenting yourself. We’ll call Dog Star when we check in the Lodge and see how Lucy is doing and then whenever you want ok? But, I’m sure she will be fine and remember, God takes care of the animals too. She’ll be fine.” Gary did his best to console me, but it was hard to turn off the guilt I felt for leaving her.
“Lord, please take extra care of Lucy this weekend. Wrap her in your arms and make her feel safe and secure like I would. I don’t want to spend the weekend worrying about her and we are already almost there. Thank You for letting me count on you. I love you…Amen” I prayed silently.
Pulling into the lodge and getting checked in was an easy task, but the snow was wet and heavy. A rain and snow mix made being in it very wet. We nestled into our Bavarian style room and had room service for the night. When morning came, the first peaks of sun rose over the wooden bridge and the freshly snow covered river view looked magnificent. It was beautiful. Picture perfect, I stood in awe at God’s artwork. There were no footprints to wreck the snow, there weren’t any cars because we were on the river, and it was perfect.
I grabbed my camera and began to snap picture after picture. I woke Gary so he could enjoy this moment with me and we could start our day; it was Thanksgiving. I was thankful.
I was thankful for my wonderful husband and my faithful Lucy. I called Dog Star to check on her. I talked to her; I wanted her to know she was not abandoned. I called her every day morning and night while we were gone. When we got home, we went straight to the Ranch to pick her up. She was so happily, exhausted. I don’t think she slept at all. I paid the bill, thanked them for their attention to her and we left.
Lucy mauled me all the way home with hugs and kissed. All seventy-five pounds of her lab body parked itself on my lap once we got home and I sat in my chair. She needed me, but not as much as I needed to make sure she was ok. So, we sat in the recliner and she slept for two hours straight and then I fed her and then she got back in my lap. She didn’t get far from me.
“God, thank You for keeping her safe; and thank You for giving her to me. She is the most beautiful sight I’ve seen this weekend!”
