No, I am not the ocean.
I lived for some time as a wave, desperate to be noticed, to be seen amidst the vast waters. Never resting, continually striving, the peace and stillness of surrounding waters eluded me. “I must influence the water around me, be a force, make myself known!” Momentary in greatness, a wave’s impact may be felt; but at the end of every surging journey it crashes against the shore and disappears, to be quickly forgotten and replaced by yet another.
I don’t want to be a wave.
Perhaps, I thought, life in a tide-pool is the answer. So I left the greater body to an area alone, where the stillness was consistent and safety was assured. Here there would be no crashing, no confusion, no disturbance. I could still see the greatness of the ocean from my viewpoint, but was never threatened by its dangers. But over time the waters I inhabited grew stagnant and shallow, and desperately lonely, as the ocean beckoned me home.
I was not created to live in a tide-pool.
The waters of my shallow pool being all but gone, with mere drops remaining, clinging to life on the back of glistening rocks as the gentle tide rolled in, I weighed a decision. Is it really so dreadful to exist amidst the others as a single drip of water? Can I lay down my quest to be the ocean, to move the ocean, or to escape from the ocean? Could it perhaps finally be time to surrender?
As a solitary drop of water I allowed myself to drip off the edge of the rock to which I was holding fast. I joined countless other tiny drops of water, each one unique, uniting together for a beauty much greater than its own. As I looked up and around I realized my purpose; for we were each individually reflecting the light. Together we showcase the splendor and glory of the light as a multitude of sparkling gems across an unending horizon. United we move as waves, reach out to the tide pools, and cover the earth. We are held by the One who created and sustains the waters, the One whom we serve and reflect. “Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?” (Isaiah 40:12, NIV).
No, I’m not the ocean. But it is my honor to exist as a drip of water in the hollow of God’s hand, and to be sprinkled wherever I might best reflect Him.
