We learned a lot that first year. For starters she loved mornings, I loved evenings. At 9 P.M. I was dressed in jeans and a sweat shirt eyes wide-open ready to go. Connie was in her pajamas ready for bed. Connie had one habit that nearly drove me insane. She had Post-it notes all over the apartment. I called her the Post-it note queen. If she had a class Monday morning she scribbled a note before she went to bed Sunday evening. It aggravated me to no end. On Saturday I’d furiously rip them all down begging Connie to please stop with that nonsensical habit.
Connie would always dance around our apartment singing, praising God and thanking Him for a new day. She usually fixed coffee before she showered so she could grab a cup and she always yelled, “Have a wonderful day Miss Crabby Pants” as she more or less danced out our apartment door. I would drag myself out of bed grumbling, gripping and complaining, because it was still dark outside. How could anyone be so happy before the crack of dawn? I’d shower, grab some coffee a Danish and slowly head to my first class. Our Freshmen year came and went. We were finally adjusting to each others idiosyncrasies.
At the beginning of our second year Connie had cut down on some of her sticky notes and I had finally accepted the fact that she somehow needed them. It didn’t take me as long to yank down those silly notes.
Connie never missed church, and she would tiptoe over to my bed slapping a sticky note on my headboard asking me to go with her to church. I always read that note before it went into the trash can. Finally after about six months, I decided to surprise her. I got up and quietly dressed, laying back down, I pretended to be asleep. She quietly slapped the note on my headboard. I jumped up grinning from ear to ear and said, “Good morning sunshine. Let’s get this show on the road.” Her mouth fell open as I grabbed my shoes and gingerly took her by the arm as we walked out the apartment and went to church.
I finally found out why Connie loved Post-it notes. She was one of ten children. Her mother always posted each child’s chores on their refrigerator every day before they went to school. Each had certain things they were responsible for and Connie’s mother made sure that each child felt that they were contributing to the greater good of the whole family.
It’s been many years since I met Connie, and I now consider her closer than a sister could ever be. I kept that last sticky note asking me to go to church with her. Now we attend the same church, except we have families of our own.
Ironically, now I’m the Post-it note queen. I plaster them on my fridge and bathroom mirror reminding me of upcoming events in my life.
