Martha bustled around the kitchen, humming to herself. It was such an honor to prepare a meal for Jesus and the others. “Where is Mary? She should have been back ages ago.” She stirred the pot of broth, lifting some in the spoon, and sipped. “Still not right. I need those spices!” She put the fresh bread into baskets and took them to the table.

The men had already gathered around the table, her brother sitting at his usual place, as if nothing had happened. She was still adjusting to the fact that her brother was alive and well, thanks to Jesus. It was so good to hear his voice in the house again. A miracle was sitting at their table.

She felt a slight pang of guilt when she thought of how she had accused Jesus of not coming soon enough. Her faith was shaken when she saw her brother die. But, when she saw His tears, she knew that He cared. There were no words to express their joy when they saw him come out of the grave.

There had been a constant flow of visitors since the word spread about Lazarus, but today it was nice to just have close friends there. She quietly returned to the kitchen, so she wouldn’t disturb the Master’s teaching. She couldn’t wait much longer to serve dinner, but she wanted to wait until Mary returned.

Judas’ voice rose above the others, sounding indignant about something. She moved to the door to hear more clearly what was being said. A fragrance met her at the door that overpowered the smells from the kitchen. She saw Jesus looking down lovingly at someone sitting at His feet. It was Mary, her hair hanging heavily around her face. She stood, tears in her eyes and a small jar in her hand.

Martha’s eyes filled with tears as she listened to Jesus’ words. He spoke of his death. She didn’t understand everything she was hearing, but she had a peace knowing that if He could raise Lazarus from the grave, He could do everything else He promised.

“Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.” John 12:3
