Topic: Commitment (01/05/12)
I think first of all we need to understand the word "commitment" in its purest form before we can begin to practice it in our lives. In doing this, we avoid disappointment and even heart-ache to ourselves and/or those we commit to. For example; if you commit to marriage or life-time partnership it is a decision to be well thought-through PRIOR to making the commitment. Where the commitment begins to diminish, so does the relationship.

True commitment I believe commands certain qualities in a persons nature, some of these would include - a strong sense of faith, loyalty, determination and contentment within oneself. Without these qualities the journey in fulfilling any commitment we make will be difficult. If we make a promise or commitment to anything or anyone we must be prepared and have a willingness to see it through. Far too many people I have found have loads of great ideas, flighty promises and as much commitment to them as children with new toys. It is truly wonderful to be filled with ideals and concepts, but making a commitment to them is truly a Journey. Many people, especially today, make commitments to themselves and others without carefully analysing the implications associated with it.

I have met so many people who want to improve the quality of their lives and the lives of others; there biggest draw-back - lack of commitment to undertake the task at hand successfully. Some of these people I have encountered include domestic violence issues, obesity, chronic fatigue etc., However, when I submit a plan to them, it lasts about a week! Sure, people need incentive and a mentor, but there is an element of independency that must be promoted and maintained. This independency is highlighted through commitment to the cause. I find that as soon as I begin to pass responsibility to the person to commit themselves independently, all falls away and we're back to where we began. It would seem that many people rely on the philosophy that; "while someone else does it for me its all good". NO! These are the people that need to learn what commitment truly is. It is not hanging onto a person like a small child and having everything done for them, including holding their hand. It is about learning to be independent, because dependency on others neither teaches nor promotes accountability and responsibility that lead to commitment.

Commitment is more-so about being held accountable and responsible for our words and actions. Have you ever noticed that people who are not prepared to commit are also somewhat reluctant to account and be responsible for their lives. It seems also that the word itself; "commitment" seems to be used far less today than it was yesterday. I can't remember the last time I heard someone use the word "commitment"! Society it seems is only too willing to accept endless excuses as to why someone has failed to uphold a commitment they may have made. Have we become such a tolerant society so as to readily accept those who are not held accountable and responsible for the commitments they make?

Created families, either by marriage or de-facto relationships I believe are the ones paying the highest price for the generation today that in many cases do not uphold and honour their commitments. Children are tossed around and aside like commodities on a supermarket shelf. Torn at like rag dolls, squabbled over and dragged into ferocious custody battles. They are given little guidance if any, deprived of the stability of the family unit, and of course, needless to say, deprived of valuable life experiences where all commit to each other for the cause.

Scripture admonishes us not to be wishy-washy. Joshua 24:15 tells us; ". . . . . if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day . . . . The Bible reminds us that we need to "commit" to our chosen path and not be swayed or deterred by others from it. Before committing to anything or anyone, think it through with every possible implication and scenario first. Only then are you equipped to make a promise and commit yourself to it. There is an old saying I remember my mum teaching me; "actions speak louder than words". If you cannot keep a promise and all that promise may encompass, then it is better not to make it than to break it. A commitment is a promise, not only to yourself but to the one it is made.

Strong words that might turn many people away from reading its message. But if only a few read it and embrace it, and their lives change it is a treasure! I am reminded of the rich man, turning away from Christ when he asked him to lift up his cross and follow Him. He turned away from everlasting life! I loved your story...thanks for sharing.
