We had to do this project of changing the water several times a day. Now, if you can get this picture that water that has been running through these large irrigation pipes for a number of hours. Although the water is turned off, there still is water in the pipes because it cannot go anywhere until you unhook them. Then each of us would spread out and on a count of 1, 2, 3 we would lift the pipes and water rapidly drained and flooded our shoes. Then while all of us are moving toward the next spot to place the pipes for the next allotted time of irrigating, we are slipping and sliding trying to keep our balance. If one loses their balance, it makes it quite probable that another will be losing their balance, too. If that happens all of us might find ourselves no longer upright, but instead lying in the mud.
It was a time consuming job and by the time we finished, we were really muddy and anxious to get back home to get some clean, dry shoes on. It would have been nice if we could have done this job only once a day, but we had to do it several times a day.
Eventually, the fields were watered, and we had a break before the ground started drying out again and the whole irrigation project had to begin again.
All of this was rewarded when harvest time came. We stood with pride smelling the sweet aroma of the sugar beets as they were being dug from the ground. They were loaded on trucks and hauled to the train to be transported to the Sugar Beet Factory. Life was showing its satisfaction of a job well done.
