He sat over against the precipice and stared down at the majestic sphere. Its brilliance glimmered in the surrounding darkness, drowning the flickering stars within view. There was a look of despondency in His expression, one not often seen by the hosts of heaven.
At a distance, two angels looked on with cautious yet concerned curiosity, though neither with the courage to approach their King.
“What do you suppose is wrong with the Master, Gabe? He’s been sitting there staring down at the moon for hours.”
“I’m not sure, Michael. I haven’t seen Him look this somber since, I don’t know, before the resurrection.”
“Should we … you know… see if we can help?”
“What can we possibly do to encourage Almighty God? Look! Jesus is over there. Surely He can comfort the Master. C’mon.”
So, with haste, Gabriel and Michael made their way to Jesus, who sat against a tree in the garden, chatting with a few saints. It was just casual talk; still the two messengers stood back awaiting their chance to break into the conversation. Jesus finally noticed their anxious gestures and excused Himself from the small gathering.
“What’s up, guys? You look a little flustered.”
They both tried to speak at the same time, but Gabriel motioned for Michael to take the lead.
“Um, the Master is, uh, sitting over the ledge of the universe, and just staring at the moon. He, he doesn’t look so good. We’ve never seen Him do that before. We’d like to help, but, you know, what can we possibly say to cheer up God?”
Gabriel chimed in: “Maybe you could talk to Him … see what’s wrong and all, you know?”
“Calm down, fellows! I’m sure everything is all right.”
Jesus walked in the direction of the Master, then turned after a short distance to glance back at His faithful ministers. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care it. You two go back to work.”
He soon reached the precipice, sat down next to the Master and they stared down at the moon together for a short while without saying a word. Finally, after a sigh of pleasure, He broke the silence.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
“Yes it is! Just as brilliant and noble as when We first created it.”
“You seem a little down, Father. What’s wrong?”
He forced a smile, then put His arm on Jesus shoulder.
“Today is November 21st, 2010 on earth. They are going to witness a full moon tonight; what they call a ‘blue moon’.”
“Yes, that’s right.” Jesus paused a short time, then added: “You know, there’s an expression that Americans and Europeans have used for a couple centuries. ‘Once in a blue moon.’ It’s used mostly to let someone know how seldom they do certain things. Like: ‘Dad only spends time with me once in a blue moon’, or, ‘Once in a blue moon you tell me that you love me.’ How many times have I heard that complaint from husbands and wives on earth!”
The Master stood up, walked over to the ledge, folded his arms and looked out over the expanse of the universe. Jesus knew that He had struck the nerve of the problem.
“Yeah, I know. I thought about that line when I came here this morning. You know how much I love to spend time with my children on earth. I mean, some of them talk to me regularly, and I’m thrilled when they do. But others …”
Jesus caught the eye of His Father, and together they let out a sigh of sadness as He continued.
“… I only hear from them ‘once in a blue moon’. If they only knew …”
They sat together in silence for a while, and stared down at the majestic sphere. It’s brilliance began to fade as the morning sun slowly arose in the eastern sky.
