“I have had to go through worse things than this, I will be all right. I hope the route is well marked; I can’t afford to get lost.
Thoughts begin to tumble in her head, “I am so glad Mom was able to keep little Angie at the last moment. I was surprised when Mr. Williams called. He said there was an emergency and someone had to do the presentation at the meeting in the morning -- and since I was involved in the project . . . .
“It’s clear over in Chapel Hill and I will just have time to make it. Lord, You will sure have to be with me on this one.
“There is the sign I’m looking for, ‘Two hundred ninety-five miles to Chapel Hill.’ I will get a motel and rest a little to be fresh for the meeting.
“I had to take this job, I hope I can put the pain behind me and not allow it to show tomorrow. The ache is intense tonight, and I feel so alone with all these new responsibilities.”
Her mind quiets for a moment.
“I’m here and I love you.”
“Wha . . . .”
“I will never leave you or forsake you.”
The voice is familiar. “Lord, I am so sorry. I was engulfed in my own problems and I forgot that You are always with me. Thank You for being here for me. I really need You now. Please help me to navigate this unfamiliar territory and give me peace in the midst of this storm of my life.”
“Follow the signs, Callie, I will lead you.”
Peace seems to envelope her as the lights on the car follow the dark ribbons of pavement that unfold before her. Only a few others seem to be on the road at this time of night. Up ahead she sees a billboard brightly lit. It has a large Teddy Bear and a child. It is advertising a toy store. Memories crowd into her mind. She sees herself, as a child, sitting on her bed with Honey Bear, her constant companion. He is missing an eye and looks rugged, but he is loved.
“Honey Bear, I nearly forgot about you. You gave me such comfort when Daddy died. I cried all my tears out onto you and you still loved me. I wonder where you are now. I remember too, the soothing comfort of Jesus Who was there with us, comforting me.
Tears begin to roll down her cheeks while in the quiet night, she hears, “Callie, you must forgive Jeff.”
“Lord -- I know, but I cannot think about it right now.”
Once more there is silence. Passing through a little town, she sees a billboard advertising a movie, “Now playing -- ‘Forgiven.’” It strikes a cord in her spirit.
“Callie, you must forgive your enemies and give them to Me. Place him into My hands.”
“Yes . . . yes, Lord, I do . . . I do forgive him. I give Jeff to You” the words tumble out of her mouth.
Wiping her tears, she sees the gas gauge. She remembers, “I had to leave in such a hurry; I didn’t have time to fill the car. There is a convenience store. I can get gas and more coffee.” As she approaches the door, a brightly colored poster catches her eye. “I Am the Way presented by Hillcrest Church” jumps out at her.
“Thank You, Lord, for this reminder. I know You are the way, the truth and the life and You will take me through this time also.”
After more miles and more convenience stops, Callie finally she reaches her destination. She opens the car door and hears, “Plop.” Looking on the ground, there lies little Angie’s bear that has fallen out of the car. She flashes back to the pain she felt sitting on her bed with Honey Bear. “Oh, Jesus, You are still with me even during this time of trial and pain. You have never left me. You are forever faithful.”
“I will never leave you. Watch for the signs.”
