When each day you filled me with a glow,
That found the smile that all did see
That you brought to me for others to know
And every time that I did arrive
As I spoke to the nurses you cried,
Because you heard my voice’s sound
And you knew that I was around
Then I would come and lift you into my hands
And you would smile that special way you do,
And with a twinkle in your eyes I really knew
My life’s joy was only you
And the time that we spent together
Seemed so everlasting in every way,
And I cherish all the sweet memories
when on my chest you would always lay
I remember well the day you were born
620 grams and yet so very full,
And all I saw was the need in your eyes
For me to always be with you
You taught me each day to sharethe pains
Of other parents in neonatal care,
And you inspired me to find the words to speak
Of the God above who is always near
For before you were born I was a man of few words
Yet after you came I would always speak
To anyone who would enter into my world
And in their heart God’s word I would daily leave
I remember when you finally came home
Oh it was a very blessed day
For I actually had the joy of my life
Inside my home with me to stay
But after one month my child you did catch a cold
And in the hospital you would have another stay,
I remember the last time I saw your smile
And the way it lifted me so much that last day
I went home thinking that you were fine
And that I would see you again at first light
But then I received a telephone call
Making mother’s day the darkest day in my life
They said that you were playing In your swing
Which was your most favorite thing to do each day
And in a second you did fall asleep
As your breath was taken away
And my heart was so very heavy
And my spirit brought down so low
For I realized I would never see again
Your joyful smile with that special glow
And I knew if I prayed to the Lord above
He would bring the breath back into your chest
But His spirit moved my heart to remember
That those He receives are blessed with His rest
And that one day soon in the near future
When my time does come to leave
I will embrace you in my arms again
And without much pain, I will see you… breathe.
