While this was the first event of the U.S. landing on the moon, it did not achieve all that was hoped for on that day. NASA officials planned for pictures to be taken of the moon. It was not to be because all their internal power on board the spacecraft failed two hours after launch. They did, however, have a small radio transmitter in the lunar capsule and that confirmed that they actually reached the Moon.
As exciting as that event was, an even more impressive event would come on July 20, 1969. That was the day that Neil Armstrong climbed out of their spacecraft and set foot on the moon. I can still hear his words “That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind." On this mission, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent 2-1/2 hours exploring the moon. Their other partner, Michael Collins, remained in orbit in the Command Module. While they were there, they placed a plaque commemorating their flight, and also planted the United States Flag on the Moon’s surface.
Several years later, I attended a high school class reunion. I was seated at the table with a classmate who said, “Do you remember when we were kids, and all of us boys said we were going to go into space?”
All of us at the table started talking about what we remembered. He and several other boys were really into “space.” They were constantly reading comic books about space. To all of us girls, it seemed like such a dumb thing to be excited about.
He started talking to us about working in the space program, and that he has been doing it for over 40 years. Then he concluded with “Well, I did it and it has been the ride of my life!”
It doesn’t matter what we do in life so long as it fulfills that spot we have inside ourselves that is filled with passion. The Bible tells us “So whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV)
Armstrong believed that they had only a 50 percent chance of landing on the moon, that infamous day in 1969. He said, “I was elated, ecstatic and extremely surprised that we were successful.”
His statement sounds eerily like the one of my classmate. I hear the passion and surprise at their successes.
