I liked the message of this story. One of the most important aspects of historical fiction is atmosphere, and I was missing a little of that in this story. Try to think of details to evoke the scene in your head - a little goes a long way toward creating the world in your reader's head.

I enjoyed getting to know these characters--well done with the southern dialect.

The last paragrah was a bit of a letdown--more of a summary than part of the story.
