Little Sarah walked out the door of her first grade classroom and met her mother
outside the school building.
“Hi Mama!” smiled Sarah, on seeing her mom.
“Hi honey! How was school today?” her mom asked, interested in what her daughter
was learning.
“Good. Joey gave me a kiss. He waited until after lunch before he gave it to me.”
Sarah told her mom.
Her mother wasn’t quite sure what to do with this information, so she didn’t say anything. Sarah skipped along next to her mom, as they went home together.
That evening Sarah’s mom checked the pockets of her daughter’s pink jacket before tossing it into the washing machine. Out of one pocket she pulled a small piece of purple foil. She nonchalantly threw it in the wastebasket.
The next day, Sarah met her mom after school. Both mother and daughter looked
forward to this time.
“So what did you do today?” Sarah’s mom asked, hoping it would not be a repeat of
yesterday’s conversation.
“We’re learning a poem and a song! Some of the words are hard for us to say, so the
teacher has to say them really slow.” Sarah explained to her mom.
“Good for you!” her mother said, relieved that there was elementary learning going on.
“And Joey gave me two kisses today. They were good!” Sarah declared. “He said
they’re better than the regular ones.”
“How interesting.” her mother thought, slightly panicked by now.
Later that afternoon, Sarah’s mom mentioned Joey’s attention to their daughter to her
husband. Again, a wash was prepared to go into the machine. Sarah’s mom, while talking to her husband, emptied two small purple pieces of foil from Sarah’s plaid skirt, and threw them away.
Saturday morning dawned, sunny and warm. Sarah was going grocery shopping with
her mother. They were walking down a food aisle while Sarah’ mom checked her list.
“Mama! Look! There are Joey’s kisses!” Sarah said, excitedly.
Her mother’s head jerked sideways to look at what her daughter was pointing at.
What she saw made her laugh out loud. Sarah was holding a bag of dark chocolate
kisses, each wrapped in purple foil.
