Topic: Christmas Cooking/Baking (not recipes) (10/16/08)
Christmas always has tradition in our family there were many little things that made the Christmas really our Christmas. Last week writers challenge was talking about Christmas trees, everyone has some special decorations wrapped in memories.

This week we are talking about cooking. I can tell you about two very unusual dishes we would have. The fruitcake would be made well in advance to have time to mellow. Grandma’s fruitcake is to this day the only one I’ve ever seen with coconut frosting. It is a light colored cake white icing, white raisins etc. It is also the only cake I ever saw with Brazil nuts.

Another unusual dish is the raisin pie. As I was growing up I secretly believed mama made those pies to keep the kids out of her hair for an hour or so. Mama would wash her scissors and tell us to cut every raisin not to miss one. It was not an easy job after only a few raisins the shears were a gummy mess and had to be cleaned after every few raisins. You had to do it her way, mama, told us that made the pie better. When I grew up and got in my own home I tried making the pie without cutting the raisins. It did make a difference Mama really did know best.

The fruitcake and the pie were both secret recipes, they passed down to each young woman as she approached her wedding. You might help making it but the recipes were carefully guarded and kept secret until Aunt Sue shared it with one person, knowing she was sharing it with the world because her friend had a column in the local newspaper. There could have been a lot of coconut fruitcakes that year even though it was grand-ma’s secret recipe.

Though fruitcake is not my favorite treat, it would be tempting with coconut frosting! And oh, my...cutting raisins in half...that WOULD be a chore! You have many fond memories to share with your family.

Your family has some very interesting traditions, and I enjoyed hearing about them.

Don't be afraid to use your full 750 word count. What you have here is good, but I was anxious to hear more about your family's Christmas baking traditions. :)

Some delicious memories, but I would have liked to have gotten to know the characters on a more personal basis. Dialogue would probably have brought that out more. :)
