"My eyesight just ain't good anymore doll," she said, as she struggled to get the red thread through the eye of the needle.
"Can I help you?," I responded.
She looked at me with a half smile that you could only truly admire if you knew my gradmother. I was only nine then and didn't understand what her half-smile symbalized but now at twenty six I do. Then all I did was laugh when she responded.
"As you get older everything begins to go, your eyesight, hearing, sometimes things even taste different, but thank God I've gained a lot of wisdom to hold on to."
"Lena," she spoke sweetly as finsihed up the final stiches on my red and white polka dot dress, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
I giggled, "A Grown Up."
"There are many things you can be Lena along with being a grown up. How about a doctor or a teacher? Or maybe you'd enjoy being a chef...you love making those chocolate chip brownies with me.
"Which do you think I'd be best at grandma?" I said as I gently placed myself on her lap.
"I can see you becoming anything that cares for other people or for anything for that matter. Even a vetenarian, she said as she zipped that back of my dress closed."
"Then I think I should be a grandma," I responded.
Thinking back now, it was the first time I saw grandma's whole face smile. Her ees lite up...her cheeks got rosy, and I hugged her. Perhaps all the disqualifications that life sometimes labels people because of they don't have or the because they aren't prestiogious - was forgotten, and for the first time I saw her face light up - a full smile - and still I want to be just like her.
