I wiped my eyes and looked at the thirty-two empty desks. The children had been gone for twenty minutes, but I could still see them sitting there as they worked on projects or waited anxiously to see what crazy thing I would do or say during a science lesson. Antonio had looked so happy when I added some Spanish books to the class library. Not half an hour later he had beamed with pride as he announced in broken English that he had finished reading all of them. Joyce and Debbie seemed as though they would never stop smiling when they had earned their first A’s on a math test after a long string of D’s and F’s. That tiny bit of extra tutoring during lunch had done wonders. And I could still see the pleased look on David’s little face as he said, “I finished it! I’ve never read a whole book before!”
More tears pored from my eyes, but now they were accompanied by a smile. I looked down at the pile of assorted thank-you notes and drawings that the children had given me. Among them was a little certificate from Lilly titled, “Most Valuable Teacher.” As we said good-bye, Lilly had said, “I’ve learned a lot from you. Thank you.”
I sighed and forced myself to stop crying. I missed my students terribly, and the thought that I would never see most of them again almost brought the tears back. But one thought was a comfort as I began to prepare the room for next year; I was not wasting my life.
