Imagine if you can a dancing bun. The one I’m picturing is actually more of a donut. With chocolate frosting. So I am sitting and watching this spinning piece of confectionary and thinking to myself, “Man, this is bizarre!”

Then I take a step back into reality. I think of the phrase, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” [Matthew 6:33, NIV] And I think, “Wow, actually that is pretty different.” More different than a bun dance perhaps?

The passage is talking about the basic needs we have and it seems like his formula is presented to help one acquire their needs. But then if you look really carefully at it and pull the thing apart a little bit, you might notice that there is a hidden formula for abundance, sneakily lurking right in front of you.

His kingdom and His righteousness. That’s pretty all inclusive. For what truly wise person will be able to locate anything of abundance that exists outside of that right there?

And that’s the devil’s ploy right there I think. Never be satisfied with what you have. The grass is always greener on the other side. Question God’s command. “Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”?” [Genesis 3:1] You’re sitting there with abundance Adam and Eve… you have it all… perfect relationship with God… rulership over creation… why not try that forbidden fruit right there? It will satisfy you!

So we keep on seeking for that thing that will satisfy, that so-called worldly abundance (sometimes he’s even craftier and disguises it as “spiritual abundance” or “prosperity”) when actually God has placed it right in front of us.

My Kingdom and My righteousness. Because if you have that, you actually have everything. Everything else is extra.

So next time you feel the lure towards what has the appearance of abundance, try to imagine the silly little picture in your head. Remember the Bun Dance. And when you realize how silly even the concept and idea of that is, then remember that what hyou are even thinking about pursuing is crazy. Because everything you need is already right there in front of you, freely offered by the One who gave His all.

An interesting devotional...not the usual hum-drum type. And yes, the Dancing Bun did lure me in...but your writing kept me. Nicely done.

The title brought me into this neatly packaged devotional. Thanks for posting.

Love this line: it says it all - "My Kingdom and My righteousness. Because if you have that, you actually have everything. Everything else is extra. " Nicely done.
