IF I’D BEEN THERE
If I’d been there,
I’d have sat on the ground
with all the rest,
the thickness of my handmade dress
my only cover
from the dewy damp grass
beneath me on that hillside.
I’d have sat, like all the others;
babies with their mothers,
fathers, and countless others.
I’d have waited just to hear.
with a patient ear,
though the sun grew hotter overhead,
and my mouth craved water
and a bit of bread.
I’d have waited just to hear Him speak
words so wise that would help me seek
the power of His presence in my heart.
And I’d have listened hard to hear Him say
on the grassy hill on that sun filled day,
about a Kingdom
not so far away,
filled with the promise of joy.
I’d have listened hard,
sitting perfectly still
Grasping each word
on that grassy hill
And I’d have come away,
with a treasure so great
The joy of promise on that Son filled day.
