When I was a child, my mother owned a silver locket. It was ornately engraved with thin, shimmering leaves and flowers. I was scarcely old enough to amble up to the wooden dresser where the antique locket lay, but I saw the chain and picked it up. I brought it to my mother, and she sat down with me and allowed me to examine it. I was fascinated by its sheer beauty.
"Do you know what's inside it?" she asked.
Inside it? I was too young to realize that the locket could be opened. My tiny hands were too unskilled to open the locking mechanism. My mother gently unlocked it, and inside, to my astonishment, was a tiny photograph.
It was a picture of me.
The locket was already beautiful, but the secret lying inside it thrilled me beyond any words that my childish heart could muster. I saw the locket as the ultimate treasure, but my mother treasured the child whose picture was clasped inside that silver compartment.
Much like a child trying to pry open a locket, we may attempt discovering the secrets of God's heart, but we are still underdeveloped and cannot truly unlock the treasure that is hidden there. However, it is possible that someday, when the time is right, God will show us. We must become calm enough to sit quietly, stilling our frantically busy hearts, and hear what is being said to us. And when that time has arrived, we may be allowed a glimpse of the marvelous mystery of our Creator's unconditional love.
Whose picture is inside God's locket?
It may very well be yours.
