Hey you! Pssst! Pssssst! You! Yes, you…faithful one with a good attitude, I’m talking to you! I found something you should know about it! It’s a hole, like a black hole… only this one feeds on churches! No kidding! Listen well and move fast! We have to stop this thing…it’s voracious!

I’m going to tell you how to spot it. I don’t know how to describe it…it’s ugly, it’s mean; it’s…it’s…oh, it’s so gruesome! It takes out everything in it’s path…visitors, Pastors, workers, entire ministries are being consumed at an alarming rate! They just disappear. One day they’re here, the next day they’re gone! They’re just gone! They vanish into space and no one ever hears from them again. Please take this seriously. I tell you this at great peril. I’m being pursued by this thing right now, even as we speak!

It’s called (shhhhh…listen close, I have to whisper…) ‘the NO-NO Zone’. It works by invading the mind first. Once it has a firm foot-hold there, it begins to take over the actions of everyone it has infected. It spreads quickly, and with precision. Its intent is to shut down every good work in its path. It targets enthusiasm and positive energy. It hates God-things, and has the ability to form an entire army overnight. Worst of all, it talks! That’s the easiest way to identify it.

It will sound like this:

“Oh no, honey! I made up my mind not to work in the nursery. My kids are all grown. I hate changing diapers! You better look elsewhere!”

Or maybe you’ve already begun to hear things like this:

“Feeding the homeless? They need to get jobs…No, I’m not interested in doing that!”

“Teaching Sunday school? You’re kidding, right? What about me, makes you think I like children? No, that’s not for me.”

“Tithes? Really, tithes? That’s sooo an antiquainted notion! No, who tithes now days? I give, but I do have a mortgage. Have you seen my new house? We had it built. It even has a theater room. We’re so blessed. You’ll have to see it some time. Tithes? How silly! ”

“Aren’t you just the do-gooder of the universe! No, I wouldn’t be interested in volunteering with the food pantry.”

“No one really appreciates all the work you do, dear.”

The NO-NO zone is deadly.

Do you understand what I’m saying? If you’re hearing these things, you are in danger of becoming infected! It feeds on apathy. The NO-NO zone counts on the faithful to stay politely quiet while it feeds. The only way it can infect one of the truly faithful is to wear them down…once they have to do all the work, because no one else will…they are prime meat. It doesn’t take much then, to topple the upper echelon. When the faithful servants begin to fall, the end is near. The black space, the NO-NO zone grows larger with every victim. The more victims… the larger the armies.

I have to run! That group of ladies walking our way? Don’t be fooled! All infected! I sent them a note asking them to serve at the Women’s conference…they grouped up and they’re hunting me down!
… the army I warned you about! They’ve taken out one servant, now they’re after me! There were only three of us to start with!

Really, I have to go…please! Let go of my hand! What? What are you doing? What? You think those women are right? A Women’s Conference is too much work? What are you doing? Let me go! No! I don’t want….
to do all the work myself. Where am I? What are you doing…

Yes Sister, I am tired. No, you’re right no one ever appreciates all the work that goes into the Women’s Conference. It is too much work, for just a few people. Let go of my hand…You’re infected…oh…God…help me!

The word says:

“For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men”
2 Peter 2: 15

I think that applies here, precious Sister. Let go of my hand, thank you. See you at the conference? I have to run, really. I inhabit the Yes Zone, in case you’re looking to invade my space again. Love to see you there! By the way, your girlfriends coming down the hallway…they will never miss you the way I will. When you’re ready, hold out you’re hand; I’ll be there. I’m infectious too.

A well written lesson. Too many times the same few do all the work.

I enjoyed this. I know all too well the "overworked few." Let me just warn you about exclamation point abuse. I used to be a horrible offender until critique partners straightened me out. Save the exclamation points for big things like "wow!" or "Fire!" That didn't take away from the great article though. Keep writing!
