My top three comfort foods are coffee, cheese and chocolate. These three foods are necessary for my health, and therefore a healthy choice. Of course, I’m talking about my emotional well-being. Now I have a question which no one can answer. Why are my top three not on the list of healthy food choices when I go to my doctor?
When it comes to coffee, hurray for caffeine! I love the articles and statistics that prove coffee is good for you. I should keep a scrapbook of them. Too bad I can’t make myself believe the reports.
I’m sure coffee is God’s wake-up juice. I need at least two cups in the morning to function. I appreciate Mike. He understands that I can’t laugh at his jokes until I get my eyes open, God knows that I struggle to wake up. He realizes if I am going to have an intelligent conversation with Him, I need my coffee. I admit to falling asleep in the recliner early in the morning, and finally realized that chair won’t work for my ‘prayer chair.’
We are connoisseurs of coffee. We love the aroma and flavor of a full-bodied coffee. While we don’t spend our hard-earned money at Starbucks, we do try to find a good blend. We have had to down-grade, as the price of our favorite blend just skyrocketed. The new blend is good, though we do add an extra scoop.
I’m happy to report finding great coffee all over the world, even where chocolate isn’t up to standard, and cheese may be scarce.
Speaking of cheese, I have always been a mouse. Anything with cheese tastes better. I’ll eat any kind of cheese, except for blue cheese. I don’t eat anything growing mold!
Grated cheese goes on the top of every casserole in our home, though not as heavily as before. I will catch myself grabbing a hand full of it if I’m not careful. I’ll eat chunks of cheese or cheese sticks, especially the pepper-jack. I prefer hard cheese, but like cottage cheese as well. I pick the low-fat variety, but who’s kidding who? The fat is still there.
I try to be reasonable, but who can resist a bagel with cream cheese? That’s why we don’t keep bagels or cream cheese around. That’s reserved for special occasions, usually when we are at a motel where bagels are the breakfast of choice along with cereal.
I love chocolate, but can go for weeks without it before I have a chocolate attack. Lately the attack has been a daily thing. Our lives have been super stressful the last few months. At least I choose dark chocolate, and the little purple-foiled squares are bite-size, plus they have almonds in them. Surely that makes them a healthy choice?
Forget the sugar surge. Besides, it tastes so good. If I only have one piece of chocolate, no harm done. They’re bite-size. Now my husband does that. He has one piece. But, then, he’s diabetic and knows the consequences of overloading on this stuff. I, on the other hand, will have two, three, or sometimes four pieces. Not as much as in a candy bar, but still more than I need.
I think about my comfort foods, and living in my comfort zone. God wants me to have a fulfilled life, and to enjoy all the good things He gives me. He doesn’t want me to feel guilty because I enjoy a good life, and have a wonderful husband. “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who trusts in Him.” Psalm 34:8
But God wants me out of my comfort zone. He wants me to live on the cutting edge. I pray that my choices will reflect my desire to serve the Lord. I don’t want to choose something, simply because it tastes good. I ask the Lord for discernment to make wise choices and follow Him completely at this season of my life.
“Lord, make me a channel of blessing, and an instrument to display Your glory. May You always be my top choice. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
