Switching Seasons

Even as I awake to the first snow fall this winter, I can not help but hope for spring to hurry-up and arrive. Growing up in New England one might assume that I love the winter and I skied down the White Mountains before I could even walk. However, the truth be told, I am an admirer of winter from behind a double pained glass with the heat turned up to 71 degrees. Winter must have been created after the fall of man. This is obvious because Adam and Eve did not need any clothing to stay warm. Words like freezing, ice, snow, and Brrrr were not even heard of.

Therefore, here is a question: Why is Christmas celebrated in the middle of winter instead of a more appropriate season, like spring? Picture this with me. Never having to worry about holiday travel’s weather conditions or walking from the car to the department store without stepping in a pile of slush. Now some thoughts may spring to one’s mind (no pun intended) that Easter already has dibs on that season but I believe these two holidays are backwards.

To illustrate, Christmas is about the birth of our Savior, He came into this world to be a new covenant between God and His people. Spring is full of new beginnings, for example, the flowers, grass and trees all come alive with fresh blooms, blades, and leaves. On the other hand, when Christ died on the cross, all that was hoped for was lost at the moment. Just like winter, the skies became dark and gloomy. Of course, our Lord rose on the third day and this is a celebration of his victory over death. According to a calendar the official day that spring starts is in March, so symbolically, Passover could be celebrated one day in December and then, Easter would be honored 3 days later. There is one possible problem, hiding the eggs would be difficult with barren surrounding, therefore as an alternative, snowballs could be used to make a rainbow of snow cones. What child in America wouldn’t like that?

Switching seasons may not catch on at first but with diligence I think Christians could pull it off. Wearing large buttons declaring, “Christmas in Spring” or “Easter in Winter” could be sold on ebay for only .99 cents. Finally, next time the words, “Merry Christmas” are uttered this holiday season, smile and say, “Happy Easter.”

I wonder if we could change the seasonal holidays just like that?
Here's another thought for you: in all likelihood we are celebrating Christ's birth at the wrong time of the year anyway. If the Jewish calendar and festival days are observed, the birth of Christ may have happened in the early fall when the Feast of Tabernacles is observed (God in the form of man came to tabernacle, abide, with us.) The Passover is celebrated in the correct season of the year, thankfully.
Your concluding paragraph is humorous. Keep writing and thinking!

Very cute. I'm dreaming of a green Christmas...

Believe it or not, I like Christmas in winter. Green Christmases,I've spent a few, just aren't as much fun. Good job though.

Cute idea. Why not? The writing needs just a little polishing. For instance, in the last paragraph, the word "which" needs to be inserted before "could be sold on ebay."

I'm a winter-hater too, from upstate New York.

Comment/ We know they can't pinpoint Dec. 25 as the precise birth date of our Saviour; but they go by the Date when all citizens had to go their hometowns to register to be taxed; (Luke 2:2-4) and Christ was born during or near that date. It would be nice IF my birthday were in the Spring...but I don't want people to change it because of the weather. But, nice job of writing! Well done.
