Tears flowed easily as she moaned, ‘O Lord, please help me. Renew my faith and grant me courage to trust the future to your mercy. I don’t even know what to ask for. Please give me the assurance that all will end well’.
It was true that she did not know what to pray for. Ken her oldest son, after fifteen years of marriage, was going through a painful divorce. Mark had lost his job a year ago. With three kids to care for his wife, Amanda, was unable to find even a part-time job. And now Amy had received a message that her pregnant daughter, Crystal’s sonogram revealed that the baby had clubfeet. Amy worried about how Crystal would be able to take care of the baby alone since her husband, a marine, was stationed somewhere in the middle-east.
One reads about situations like these in stories, Amy thought. They do not happen in real life, definitely not at the same time. She had gone through many problems and hardships in her life.
Widowed at an early age she had struggled through life to give her children a good Christian upbringing and a good education. If she had succeeded, it was only because of her steadfast faith in God and His unfailing mercy. Now she was old and weak. She could take any amount of suffering, but to see her children suffer was just too much and her faith was beginning to falter.
As the coffee warmed her body, Amy felt courage and hope strengthen her soul. God who had been with her all these years would not desert her in her old age. And with renewed hope she prayed, ‘Thank you, dear Father, for you promise to be with me and bless me always. I commit my children to you. I trust in you.’
Months went by. Amy kept her faith. God did not answer her prayers the way she wanted Him to. Ken divorce went through. But he got involved in church activities and found a new life. Mark got a part-time job. Amanda started a daycare center in her home for a couple of babies. Crystal’s husband got transferred back home and arrived in time to take care of the baby. God had answered her prayers in His own way and it was enough.
It was spring again. Amy wandered along the stream that flowed at the bottom of her garden. At the water’s edge she saw a new growth of green plants with clusters of tiny blue flowers. She stooped down to have a closer look and found them to be blossoms of Forget-me-nots. All through winter the plants had been frozen. But now the babbling stream had breathed life into it and it was blooming joyfully proclaiming to the world, ‘My God Forgets- me- not.’
‘Yes,’ thought Amy, ‘Like that perennial stream His infinite mercy flows on – never forgetting the ones frozen beneath the sorrows and trials of life.’
