One afternoon Mary received a call from her cousin, Letty saying she had just given birth to a baby boy. Letty was only twenty-two and was struggling to support the three children she already had so she knew she could not keep the baby. At first Letty asked Mary if she would adopt the baby, but Mary told her no because she was hoping to adopt the foster baby she was already caring for. Since Letty knew Mary was involved in her church’s adoption ministry she asked her if she would help her find parents for the baby.
Almost immediately Mary thought of my daughter, Julie and her husband, Greg. They had been talking for months about how they would love to adopt a little boy who was between three and four years old. They already had two girls and one boy, so adopting another boy would round out their family perfectly. When the call came from Mary, Julie first hesitated because they had not really talked seriously about adopting a newborn. Neither of them were sure they wanted to go through the up all night and diaper stages again. Finally Mary convinced Julie to at least meet with Letty.
Julie finished her work day and headed up to the hospital. She was nervous, but she could not figure out why. Her gut told her she really did not want to adopt a newborn. As she approached the door to Letty’s room she heard a baby crying. Her heart leapt at the sound and she felt a calm come over her. As Letty explained to Julie how she could not take care of another child a bond began to form between them. An hour later it was apparent to Julie God had brought this baby boy into the world for Greg and her to raise. After work Greg came to the hospital to meet Letty and the baby. Hours and several prayers later the three of them agreed, Greg and Julie would adopt this beautiful little boy. All doubts about adopting a newborn had flown out the window the minute each of them held this unexpected gift from God.
Once the custody paperwork was complete, Greg and Julie went to Letty’s home to pick up their new bundle of joy. Letty’s parents had asked if they could meet the adoptive family so Julie asked if I would go with them. We all exchanged grandchildren stories and by the time we left her parents had tears of joy in their eyes. They thanked us for taking this beautiful baby to raise as our own.
Greg and Julie had told their three children they would be bringing home a baby boy they would be fostering for a while and possibly adopting. Immediately after they got in the front door my older grandson said “Let me take a good look at my new little brother”. I told him it was not a done deal yet and he promptly told me, “Grandma, I have prayed to God for a long time for a baby brother, and He has given him to me. It is a done deal, God says so.” I could not help but hope he was indeed right.
Since the father of the baby was listed as unknown on the birth certificate the adoption progressed quickly and without any complications. It was a very blessed day when the judge proclaimed the adoption of Kaeden Lee final. Indeed, my grandson had a new baby brother given to us by God. When we least expect it, God exposes our hearts to love something we never expected to.
