For the first time in his life, he could hear. Jesus told him and everyone else not to tell anyone of this miracle, but the man could not understand the words that Jesus or anyone else was speaking. He had never heard speech before. He put his hands up to his ears and covered them with his palms, then released, and repeated his motion. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing…he couldn’t comprehend.

“Who healed you?” came the voice of a Pharisee in the distance.

The man looked in the direction of the Pharisee and smiled. Though he couldn’t understand what he was hearing, he could tell from the expression on the Pharisee’s face that the Pharisee was both confused and angry.

“Who healed you?” came the voice again, but the man could not understand. He tried to speak, but found the words difficult to say as he had never heard them spoken. Jesus had healed both his difficult speech and deafness, but the man had never practiced hearing or speaking before… it was wonderful, he thought.

The Pharisee persisted, but the man could only smile. His joy was a ridiculous reaction to the anger in the Pharisee’s voice. Suddenly, the former deaf man heard something in the distance.

“It’s beautiful!” he managed in a mumbled voice, astonished at the sound of his own voice. He was drawn to the beautiful noises in the distance and began walking in their direction. He wondered what the beautiful sounds were. The Pharisee was screaming, but this noise that the man was hearing was so beautiful that it nullified the anger given by the Pharisee.

As he approached the source of the noises that he had never heard, a crowd developed behind. He heard the footsteps of all the people behind him and turned around. He smiled. His joy spread throughout the crowd as though he were the brightness of the noonday sun. The beautiful noises were louder and echoed in his perfect ears. Ears made perfect by the healing power of his savior.

He wanted to scream… he wanted to rejoice. The angry Pharisee was overpowered by the astonished crown. The sounds in the distance pierced through the air. “What is it?” he managed to ask. He put his hands in the air and looked around to indicate the noise. He had never heard this noise before and didn’t quite know how to describe its beauty. “It’s beautiful,” he said again, “what is it?”

One of the women in the crowd realized what he was asking and approached. She looked at the face of the man, whose smile gleamed in such a way that she could not help but to smile back. She motioned her hands in the air to indicate the noises throughout the streets and said, “What you hear… is singing.”

The man was taken aback by what the woman said. He formed the word with his mouth and practiced saying it, “S…s…sing…singing.” He repeated it over and over again. The rhythm of the music was joyful, and he began to dance towards where the singing was coming from. He came upon a synagogue where he found people singing praises to God. Something swelled in his heart and he was compelled to go inside. Without thinking, and without knowing the words, the words of praise swelled in his heart so greatly that he began singing.

He sang songs of salvation and praise and he never stopped. Jesus had healed his voice and ears, and he resolved that day to never stop praising him. He sang praises to God until the day he died on earth…now he praises God for eternity with perfect ears and perfect voice. Praise God.

What an interesting "take" on a familiar story. Nice.

This is great--a thoughtful telling of "what happened next." Well-written.

"His joy was a ridiculous reaction to the Pharisee's anger..." very nicely done! I could see the man grinning away as the beauty of sound filled his newly healed ears. God bless
