“Hey Billie! What are you up to?” I hollered at my best friend from my front yard.
“Not much of nothing Mickey. Mom’s cleaning house cause company is coming. She told me to get out of her way for a while so she could concentrate on putting things in order. Let’s shoot some hoops to pass the time until dinner time.”
“Sure thing Billie. My Moms doing the same thing yours is, and it’s best if I stay out of her way for sure. When company comes everything has to be in its place is what she says.”
“Mickey do you know what a potluck dinner is? I asked Mom what we’re having for dinner, and she told me potluck. I’ve never heard of that kind of dinner before. I hope it’s good.”
“Darned if I know Billy. Maybe you eat whatever is in the pot. I don’t know if I’d like potluck, cause if it’s something I don’t like I sure don’t want to eat it.” All I know is when our family gets together everybody brings what they want to eat, and we eat it out in the backyard. We have iced tea, sweet or unsweetened, potato salads, coleslaw, hot dogs, relish, corn on the cob, fried chicken, hamburgers with all the fixings, barbecue, and all kinds of yummy desserts.”
“Well, I just heard our Moms calling us so I guess we’d better head home. Mickey, if I don’t like potluck do you think your mom would mind if I eat dinner with you?”
“It’s alright with me Billie, but I’ll have to ask Mom, cause it’s a family get together. Maybe a potluck dinner will be delicious. I guess you’ll have to find out when you get home. Call me, and let me know what a potluck dinner is. Okay.”
It wasn’t long before Mickey heard his phone ringing, and when he answered he heard Billie laughing. “What’s so funny, Dude?”
“Oh, Mickey, you will never believe what a potluck dinner is. It’s not something in a pot like we thought. It’s when everybody brings their favorite food so all can share it. Mom laughed, and gave me a big hug when I told her what we thought potluck meant. We are having the same thing you are. Well, everybody is getting ready to dive in so I’ll catch you later.”
“Thanks Billie. Mom hollered that the foods ready so got to go. Later Dude.”
