I have received your letter of resignation. I must say that I am astounded at your intention to leave this prestigious London hospital for a minor role in community medicine. I must warn you that this retrograde step that will seriously jeopardise your career. I need hardly remind you that posts at St Bartholomew University Teaching Hospital are extremely popular and it will be most unlikely that you will be able to return if you proceed.
Therefore to give you an opportunity to reconsider, I will hold onto your letter until Monday 24th May. I urge you strongly to withdraw your resignation. Your work so far has been satisfactory but you must be more sensible in the future or I may have to consider disciplinary action.

Hey there James, this is Lucy, mum is in a right state, she’s really worried you’re ill or something. She’s going on about how she is going to tell the neighbours and how you’re throwing your life away on some whim. She says you’ve gone all religious and want to go work among the poor and needy. Believe your big sister, we ALL go through those phases, it wont last, I think you’re having a delayed teenage rebellion. You were always such a conformist, never going to wild parties just working hard to get to med school. I think you missed out somehow. I mean I was the standard teenager, remember my body piercing and Goth stuff! I was the one our parents worried about, but look at me now, married mum of two kids, normal as anything, James, please listen, you can do the church thing and carry on at your job, you don’t have to let it take over your life. I mean look at Dad he is a respected Doctor and on the church committee and all that stuff. And another thing, if you go and live on some rundown housing estate it’s going to be really hard for me to bring the boys over to see you and your nephews love their uncle James.

Lord, this is James here. I have had such a backlash from everyone. I knew Mum and Dad wouldn’t understand but all my friends think I am mad, even my best mate Matt. Truly I’m ready to drop everything for you, but I do need to hear YOUR voice clearly through all the noise. I knew the Prof would not be pleased. It is crazy from the worlds point of view giving up a well paid job to go and work on the Whiteleaf estate, but ever since I heard that the church was opening a community centre there and need a doctor to head up a team to work with homeless and refugees, I am sure that you have been leading me to be that person. All those bible verses that have just jumped out at me and I reckon that’s exactly where You would be, so I am trusting you. I am sad about Lucy but I reckon she will come round and realise I am not dropping out of anything but taking up something new.
