Watching the outdoor performance of the Passion Play portraying the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the South Dakota hills was outstanding and even beautiful. At the end of the performance, we heard thunder in the distance and many people scrambled up the steps to get under the overhang and out of the rain. Then my husband nudged me to look at the stage where Jesus and His disciples were standing together. I believe the thunder and lightning came at the special and perfect time that made the experience seem more outstanding and real.
I will never forget that performance which happened for us several years ago. I’m sure it is replayed each year at a specific time. The actors and actresses were so real, we felt as if we were there watching a real, true episode of history.
Recently, we went to our church for communion just before Resurrection Sunday (Easter). First, we saw a short film about the time leading up to the Crucifixion and one of our Pastors explained it briefly. We were taken upstairs at the church and there in a dimly lighted room, which is actually called the Upper Room, we saw the disciples sitting around a table with Jesus. Jesus passed the bread and drink to His disciples, for this was the Last Supper. The disciples were all dressed appropriately for the times. Jesus even mentioned that Judas was the one who would betray Him.
Next, we were given the drink and we broke bread together. As we left the room, our Pastor blessed each one of us. It was almost as if we were guests at the Last Supper.
What a lovely evening it was – solemn and quiet and everyone was blessed.
