Author’s Note: A collect, pronounced “CALL-ect”, is a traditional form of gathering prayer used in the Catholic and Episcopal churches. It follows this form: You (calling on the Lord’s name), Who (acknowledging His wondrous deeds), Do (presenting our petitions), Through (Jesus Christ).
Father of Light
daily you shine hope on Your people
and, like blind flowers, we
turn our faces heavenward
seeking light and warmth.
You root us
in the soil of your word.
You quench our thirst
with gentle rain.
You clothe us in brilliant color,
our petals soft as fine silk.
You breathe
and we are moved.
Walk in your garden;
come close to us.
May our prayers
like the sweet smell of honeysuckle,
draw You nearer
and may our praises
like the perfume of roses
surround You.
The evil one
has trod our paths;
he has crushed us,
and like lavender,
the scent of our sorrow
trails in his wake.
His breath is
a hot, dry wind.
Shaken and withered,
our petals fallen,
we are naked
in Your presence.
Do not leave us in shadow.
Tend to us.
Nourish us so that we
might bathe in Your light
and adorn your paths.
Forever.
Through your Son,
Jesus Christ,
the Master Gardener,
Amen.
