Oh, it was sad, and I had no idea it would end that way. Tears flowed as the closing credits rolled on the movie “Fiddler on the Roof”; the story of a Jewish family with five daughters, facing challenges to their long-held beliefs and traditions.

The songs in the musical all have meaningful messages, yet one particular song moves me each time I hear it: Sunrise, Sunset. Tevye, the main character, sings this poignant melody at his daughter’s wedding. It speaks about how fast the kids have grown up and of time passing so quickly. The chorus laments:

Sunrise, Sunset
Sunrise, Sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

King Solomon spoke of the passing of years and how even though things are different, they are the same. In the Book of Ecclesiastes, he writes:

“Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.

The sun rises and the sun sets and hurries back to where it rises.

The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course.

All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place streams come from, there they return again.

All things are wearisome, more than one can say.

The eye never has enough of seeing nor the ear its fill of hearing.

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”
(NIV)

Circumstances change, yet life remains the same. Babies are born, they grow up, they may get married, and they die. Seasons come and go. Time comes and goes. Life comes and goes.

The movie has a heart-breaking ending, and we are left to ponder what happens next. Life as we know it has its sorrows and joys, its happiness and its tears. But when we have Jesus Christ, who never changes, we have the strength to face whatever happens.

The years speed by, and life recycles itself, yet, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8 NIV)

This read as sweetly as the song "Sunrise,Sunset" sounded! Deeply embracing and yet softly simple. Wonderful devotional and soothing to the soul!

Congratulations on your third place. I do believe devotions are your niche. You have such a lovely message. Sunrise, Sunset was the song that I walked down the Aisle with my father at my wedding instead of Here Comes The Bride. Like in your message, I wanted my marriage to be timeless; Great job!

That's my mom's favorite movie, so I grew up watching it often. Great message--good reminder that we need not worry, just have faith that God will see us through.

Congratulations, Barb! I like your connections between this heart-wrenching movie and the scripture references.

Congratulations, Barb, on recognition for this excellent story. That song has brought some of those same thoughts to me, but I haven't expressed them so eloquentely!
