The beginning of a new year is always exciting for me. I’m a big time list maker and I love to make a list of goals each year. It seems to me that people fall into one of two camps. They either like to make goals or resolutions at the beginning of the year or they down right abhor it. I’ve had people tell me how they don’t believe in it; they think it’s stupid and the like. One friend said that it doesn’t work to make goals because none of us know what the future holds. Well, that may be true I don’t know what may happen this year. Instead of looking at it as something I have no control over whatsoever, I rather look at the new year with hope. My written goals are a reminder to me that while I don’t have total control over what happens to me I do have choices. I choose things like, what is important to me and what I want to spend my time on. Who I spend my time with and what I would like to personally achieve.
I think an important part of making these goals is to wrap them up in prayer and to ask God about them. He knows me better than anyone else. He knows where I really need to improve as well as my strengths. He knows the desires of my heart – and he cares about them! I’m so thankful that my God knows me and loves me so much that he wants to be an intricate part of my life. He wants to be my life! While I may not know all the details about what this year will become, I can look forward to it knowing that God is already there. I know that He is working everything out for my good. I know that it is His desire to bless me and not to harm me. When I keep these things in mind it’s easy to get excited about the New Year. It feels like the beginning of an adventure. I wonder about how God will use the circumstances, people and new experiences of the year to help mold me. Each day I awake knowing that God has a plan and a purpose and I’m a part of it.
No, I cannot see the future. I have no control over a lot of it. No worries though, I pray for His guidance in what I do have choice over and I when I look into the future – I see Him.
