“The World Squirts Purple”

The world squirts purple as I step down from my bed. My tongue is tied firmly so I will not slip. What I wouldn’t give for a thousand eyes to see him again. Is that you way beyond the blue? The blood rushes red to my head and I take off my rose-colored glasses so I can see clearly then the reindeer. The games the fat cat plays when they’re away would make a blind man blush with glee. But as I said, I got up from my bed and pounced on the purple floor. I tried the door and lo and behold the knob stuck faster than a locomotive and I wondered where it would take me. The first stop had to be removed so the door would even open. The second took me back to my grandparents’ farm in Iowa with its golden cornfields. The third was far into the future when not only my grandparents had passed but I had too. Finally we returned home, my knob and I, where I had just stepped down from my bed, removed the glasses I slept in, and tried the stubborn door. This time it opened without resistance and I slid down the banister. Along the way I had many visions in my head. I saw three French hens kissing under a firework and missile show. I saw four calling girls fighting something fierce over the extra gold ring. I saw five, make that six, Sicilian sailors sailing the seven seas, and when you shook the crystal ball it snowed white on them like there was no tomorrow to predict. By the time my ride was over and I landed on another sugarplum, I saw him. His skin was black as ashes and his beard was a ghastly grey. His suit, I supposed, was red but without my glasses it looked black as ashes and outlined in a ghastly grey. Mommy lay in his arms snoring. I slid back up the banister to tell my kid sister Ursula our daddy was back.
