TITLE: The Good Earth
By Mildred Sheldon

“Grams, please read me the story of “The Good Earth.” God made everything in six days and rested on the seventh day. He made man from the dust of the earth and used Adams rib to make Eve. Did you know that? Sammy said excitedly.

“Yes Sammy I know God made us from dust. My precious, you practically know the story by heart. Why don’t you tell me the story while I make us some sugar cookies.” Grams said.

“Grams I can’t read the words,”

“That’s alright honey, you just tell me the story and I’ll listen. Is that alright with you?”

Sammy’s demeanor changed and he became very serious. He cleared his throat like his grandpa and proceeded with the story. Grams turned back to the cookie dough and chuckled quietly.

“A long time ago God made the earth and it was good. The earth was beautiful and it had lots of animals, birds, trees and everything else God made. The animals, birds, trees and everything else were different colors. He put creatures in the seas and they were different colors. Sammy paused and said, Grams he made fuzzy brown rabbits just like Jojo my rabbit and brown bears like the one in the zoo. He made trees with brown skin. God made lots of stuff and He said it was good. He rested on the seventh day cause He was tired.”

She was thankful her back was turned to Sammy when he said that God was tired after he created everything. She was trying so hard not to laugh. She turned around ruffled Sammy’s hair and kissed him on his cheek.

“Sammy trees have brown bark not skin honey. God was finished with creation so He rested on the seventh day. God doesn’t get tired like us.”

He laid the book down and forgot all about the story but continued talking.

“God made dirt brown and it is different colors of brown. Some dirt is red and blue? God likes pretty colors. Look at all the different colored birds and flowers. God likes bright shiny things.”

“Yes God loves bright shiny things and He loves you very much. I know your mom and dad has read stories of Jesus to you, but do you know who Jesus is?”

“Grams, I’m 5 years old and I know all about Jesus. I learned that in Sunday school. Jesus is God’s son and he loves me so much that he died for my sins.
He died for everybody’s sins,”

He stood there with his hands on his hips and a look of determination on his face when she turned towards him. She took him into her arms and hugged him tightly.

“Sammy, I love you very much and I am so proud of you. You are a very smart young man and I know your mom and dad are proud of you as well. Go open the oven door and I’ll put the cookies in the oven. It will take about 12 minutes for them to bake. Then we can take them out of the oven and let them cool. When the cookies are cool you can have some with a big glass of milk.

She went to the refrigerator poured a glass of milk and sat it on the table along with two large sugar cookies.

“Oh, you make the best cookies. I love your cookies. They are big and round. Mommy doesn’t make her cookies as big as yours. They taste so good. Thanks Grams.”

“Honey as you grow older always remember the story of the good earth. I know you are old enough to understand what I’m talking about. Don’t throw trash on the ground and leave it there. Everything God created is good and we are suppose to take care of it. Finish drinking your milk and eating your cookies. Your mom and dad are coming up the road. Thank you for telling me the story of “The Good Earth.” You did very well and I am so proud of you.”

“I’m so happy I came for a visit. I had fun. Did you have fun? Can we read another story when I visit again? You make reading fun Grams. I love you so much.”

Sammy hugged and kissed her, and climbed into his car seat.

“I’ll see you tomorrow. Be a good boy and here are some sugar cookies to share with your mom and dad. I love you.”
