“Hey! Get me outta here! Help! I need some air…can anybody down there hear me?” Sammy complained. “Harry, what’s the matter with these folks, anyway? Have they forgotten we’re up here? How long has it been since we last got out of this attic? I’m choking from the dust.”
Harry looked around for Heidi once more before replying. Trapped behind a box, she was sure to be forgotten. “Don’t you remember, Sammy?” Harry said. “They stored us up here last July after the Israel trip. That trip was awesome! Heidi carried toys for the children, I was full of extra clothing for Joseph’s Warehouse, and you carried Mr. and Mrs. Bates’ things,” Harry continued. “Yeah, but where did it get us? Sammy mourned. Just look at us now. We’re all covered with dust in this dark attic. I bet even God doesn’t remember that we exist.”
“Wait, Sammy! Shhh, I hear footsteps! This is IT!” Creak…creak.
“Oh, there it is…see it way over there in the corner?” Mrs. Bates said sweetly to her husband. “Can you reach it for me? Oh, thanks, hon,” she said. “I can’t wait to get packed!”
“Get ready, Sammy! Here he comes!” Harry grinned. “Me…ME…pick ME!” Sammy yelled. Just then Mr. Bates whisked them both from their attic perch and whistled his way down the steps.
“Cough…cough,” Heidi gasped. Zip…zip…zip! Heidi could hear Harry and Sammy celebrating their freedom in the next room. “We’re going to Ro-man-ia,” they chanted in sing-song unison. “Psst – psst. Heidi, can you hear us? We’re going to Romania to visit an orphanage,” Harry said. “We heard them talking about it. Can you believe this? It will be so exciting! Just think how many children will be there – and we’ll get to carry toys to them!” “Oh sure,” groaned Sammy! Bet they choose you two for the toys, and I’ll get stuck with their clothes again.”
“Will all the toys fit into that little suitcase, Mrs. Bates?” her husband asked. “It looks awfully small!” “God has a way of working things out,” she replied. "I know He wants these toys to go to His children. If you can squeeze the little trucks into your luggage, I can fit the dolls into mine.” “Sure,” Mr. Bates replied. “I’ll rearrange some things and make them fit.”
“See, Sammy,” Harry said. “I just KNEW we’d get to carry some toys.”
“Wait! Please! Don’t put me on that conveyor belt. Ouch! Oof! Could ya move over a smidge?” Sammy growled. “Brrr…its freezing down here in the belly of this plane,” he whined. “Now I know how Jonah felt!” “You ok, Heidi?” he asked. “I’m ok,” Heidi whispered softly. Remember what the Bible says, Sammy? ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ “Besides,” she continued. “It will be worth it when we see the children’s faces when they receive our precious cargo. It isn’t about us, Sammy. Now settle in…its going to be a long ride. Just try to think of the children!”
“Heidi, wake up,” Harry said. We’re here! You slept through the ride to the orphanage, and even missed seeing the boys receive their toy trucks. You won’t want to miss this, though. Mrs. Bates is about to give a doll to each little girl.”
Zip…zip…zip. Heidi rubbed her sleepy eyes as her top was lifted back to reveal her treasure. Into each pair of waiting arms Mrs. Bates gently placed a life-like infant baby doll wrapped tightly in a soft colorful blanket. Tears of joy shattered the language barrier as each precious little girl held her treasure tight to her heart.
“Sammy, Harry, see what I mean?” Heidi beamed. Have you ever seen such radiant faces? And to think God used us to carry His treasure to these little ones…three dusty pieces of luggage hidden in an attic.”
“Gee…I’m so ashamed of my grumbling,” said Sammy. I pray God will forgive me and use me again, even though I don’t deserve it. Will you forgive me, Heidi and Harry?”
“Sure, we forgive you, and we know God forgives you, too.”
